Ask someone that crochets “What’s your fav season?” and I bet you might hear “Beanie Season” in response!! I know it’s one of mine and here in Northern Michigan it is officially beanie season as of now. Buuuuuut- as the weather starts to get bitter cold, as it always does here in the dead of winter, I find myself needing just a little more warmth than the typical crochet beanie usually offers (I’m always cold…like ALWAYS cold) For me the solution is simple- a double brim on my beanies.
A double brim is easy to accomplish and adds an extra layer of fabric around the base of your hat making sure those ears are toasty. Using the method below you won’t lose any of the style or the stretch.
For this tutorial I’ll be using my Chasing Rabbits Beanie as an example.
Seeing double:
The Chasing Rabbits Beanie is made with a single brim that consists of rows of sc worked in the BLO. The pattern starts with this:
ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (8)
For our double brim we are going to double the number of stitches (8) and then add 3. ch 8+8+3= 19
1.sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (18)
2. ch1 turn, sc in same st, sc in BLO in each of next 16, sc in last st. (18)
3-64. repeat row 2
Now bring the 2 short ends together to form a ring. Ch 1 and slip stitch through each st until you reach the top. Be sure you are working through both layers.
Ch 1 and turn your brim right side out so that the seam is on the inside.
Now you’re going to fold the brim in half the long way, bringing the bottom edge up to your hook. You will now join the two ends together by working the first round of your beanie, going through booth layers as you work. That doesn’t make a lot sense, does it? Check out that photo below to clear things up.
That step is a little bit awkward at first, once you get a couple of stitches worked, it gets a lot more comfortable to hold.
This is what it should look like once you’ve worked all the way around.
And that’s how you create a double brim. Easy peasy!!
