Free Beginner Easy Crochet Shawl Pattern: Step Up Shawl

This easy crochet shawl pattern will not disappoint!

The Step Up Shawl is a very simple pattern with a stunning result. The pattern is perfect for beginners that are just starting to crochet or veteran crocheters that need to use up some scraps! Did I mention there is NO sewing of ends? None! Changing colors has never been easier! All of the tails will be incorporated into fringe from either end of the shawl!

Supplies

  • Yarn:  medium/4/worsted weight yarn
    • Color A (Main color): 403g/720yds
    • Color B: 338g/602yds total
      • 13g/row
    • “I Love This Yarn” by Hobby Lobby used in the pattern
  • 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

Following  stitch pattern:

4” x 4” = 13 rows x 13 stitches

Notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US terms.
  • Final length (not including fringe): 72”
  • Adjust the length by adding or subtracting from the starting CH in multiples of 2.  Final CH should be an ODD number.
  • Final width: 18”
  • Adjust the width by adding or subtracting repeat rows.
  • CH 1 at the beginning of rows does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Substitute any yarn by adjusting your hook size and adjusting the stitch counts as mentioned above.
  • Leave a long tail at the end of each row that will be incorporated into the fringe.
  • Stitch counts are noted  at the bottom right of each row in [ ].
  • Instructional photos are added after the pattern.

Stitch Abbreviations & Symbols

CH– chain

ST– stitch

SC- single crochet

DC- double crochet

HDC- half double crochet

*- repeat instructions starting at this point

**– marks extra notes/tips

Pattern

Starting with Color A, CH 231

Row 1:

  • HDC into 2nd CH from hook
  • HDC in each CH across

Row 2: CH 1 (does not count as ST), turn

  • SC in same ST
  • DC in next ST
  • *SC in next ST
  • DC in next ST
  • Repeat from * across

Row 3: With Color B, CH 1, turn

  • SC in same ST
  • DC in next ST
  • *SC in next ST
  • DC in next ST
  • Repeat from * across.

Rows 4-56: Repeat Row 3, alternating Color A/Color B every row

Row 57: With Color A, CH 1, turn

  • HDC in same ST
  • HDC in each ST across.

Fasten off.  

Finishing

Option 1: Weave in ends. 

Option 2: Fringe

  • Cut yarn (coordinated to the color of each row) that is double the length of your desired fringe.
  • Working one row at a time, fold coordinating yarn in half.
  • Insert hook in the edge of the row.
  • Pull the folded end through the edge.
  • Yarn over with the fringe ends plus the tail and pull through the loop.
  • Pull fringe to tighten.
  • Repeat across both edges.
