Free Crochet Pattern – The Western Bay Earwarmer

The Western Bay Earwarmer is the first in the Western Bay line by CarlieFlo. This earwarmer is the perfect alternative to a beanie or hat. Forget about choosing between staying warm or rocking the messy bun- this cold weather must-have lets you do both. The earwarmer is stylish yet simple. Simple stitches used in a special way give it some textured ridges and a fun twist in the front adds super cute interest. The Western Bay Earwarmer is available in 6 sizes, from baby to adult large. Can we say Mommy and Me sets?!

The Western Bay Earwamer is beginner friendly. This piece is worked flat creating a skinny rectangle and then seamed together in a special way to create the twist. Don’t be intimidated by the twist!! It’s easy once you see how it’s done.

Materials:

Yarn: I Love this yarn by Hobby Lobby or another 4/worsted weight (yardage from about 35 yards in baby size to 100 yards for adult large)

Size 6mm (J) crochet hook: I’m using my favorite clover amour hook.

Scissors

Yarn needle

Measuring tape

Guage: 4 x 4″ swatch = 13hdc x 7 rows

Stitches/Abbreviations:

ch- chain

st- stitch

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

blo- back loop only

Notes:

• This pattern is written using US terms and abbreviations
• I tend to crochet a little bit tight when using my Clover Amours. You may need to drop down a hook size to meet gauge.
• This pattern can easily be adjusted for any yarn/hook as long as your finished rectangle matches the measurements in the chart below.
• The first and last stitch of each row will be worked through both loops. All other stitches, in between, will be worked in the back loop.
• I DO NOT add my wooden label tags to the baby or toddler sizes. Little ones tend to find a way to pull these off and that makes me nervous as it would pose a choking risk.
• Yes!!! You can absolutely sell items you make from my pattern. I hope you do! When appropriate and possible, I ask that you link back here. Please, use your own photos when selling any items made from this pattern.

**edited 10-25-2020** I see a mistake in my photo below. The adult women’s size should measure 19×4.5” and the adult large should measure 20×5” I will edit the photo and replace it.

Baby: starting ch 55, total rows 7

Toddler: starting ch 58, total rows 9

Child: starting ch 61, total rows 11

Tween/Adult S: starting ch 64, total rows 13

Adult M/Women: starting ch 67, total rows 15

Adult L/Men: starting ch 70, total rows 17

The Pattern:

Create a starting chain based on the size you are making from the chart above.

1. Working in the back bump, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. (For a quick tutorial on working in the back bump check here- The Back Bump – A Crochet Tutorial

2. ch1 turn. sc in the first st, sc blo in each st across until 1 st remains. sc in last st.

3. ch1 turn. hdc in first st, hdc blo in each st across until 1 st remains. hdc in last st.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have the correct amount of rows from the size chart above or the correct measurements. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Now we’re going to sew the ends together to form the twist.

Without turning your work, lay it flat and thread your yarn needle onto the long tail you just made.

Fold the rectangle in half, bringing the bottom edges up to the top.

Next, bring the two short ends together and interweave them like shown below.

Sew all the way across the short end, making sure to go through all 4 layers as you sew.

Fasten off and weave in your ends. Turn your earwarmer right side out and admire your handiwork!! Crazy how it made that twist right?! Now make a bunch more and get your booth stocked!!
