Free Crochet Crop Top Pattern- Roam Halter Top

The Roam Halter Top is the perfect crochet crop top for any advanced beginner. This easy halter features easy HDC stitches along with some fun puff stitches. This crochet crop top has full coverage across the bust with a fully open back! With less than a skein of yarn and one afternoon you can have one ready to wear!

The Roam halter is available below for free in the size XS. A printable, ad-free PDF version is available on Ravlery here. The PDF includes sizes XS-XL. It is written in a bullet point format and is color coded by size for easy reading. The paid version also includes many step by step photos that are posted after the pattern for easy printing; a color-coded quick sheet with all of the need to know numbers that is very handy when making multiple crochet cop tops; and printable hang tags and care cards that are perfect when selling or gifting your makes.

Supplies

  • Yarn:  medium/4/worsted weight:  I am using Red Heart “Ombre”

XS- 115g//195yds

  • 6mm (J) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Markers

Gauge

HDC for gauge

14hdc x 11 rows = 4”x 4”

Notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US terms.
  • This pattern is worked in rows back and forth.
  • CH 1 at the beginning of rows DOES NOT count as a ST
  • This top is cropped in fit and designed to fit snug.  For more or less coverage, size up or down.
  • To add or subtract length, add or subtract repeat rows in Section B.
  • The free pattern below is written for size XS. Sizes XS-XL are available via PDF here.

Sizing

XS  fits bust 28-30

S fits bust 32-34”

M fits bust 36-38”

L fits bust 40-42”

XL fits bust 44-46”

Stitch Abbreviations & Symbols

CH– chain

CH SP- chain space

ST– stitch

SL ST– slip stitch

SC– single crochet

HDC– half double crochet

HDC2TOG- half double crochet 2 together

Puff ST- yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop 4 times (9 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on hook.  CH to close. 

*- repeat instructions starting at this point

SECTION A

Row 1 CH 55

  • SC in 2nd CH from hook and each CH across.

Row 2 CH 1, turn

  • SK 1st ST
  • *Puff ST in next
  • SK next ST
  • Repeat from * across.

**Final CH to close does not count as the turning CH**

Row 3 CH 1, turn

  • Puff ST in space between 1st two puffs from the previous row.
  • *Puff ST in next space
  • Repeat from * across.

**Work the final Puff ST in the turning CH space from the previous row**

Row 7 CH 1, turn

  • HDC in each Puff ST and each CH SP across.

**Place a ST marker at the beginning and end of Row 16. These markers will be used later when making the top straps.**

Section C

Row 17 CH1, turn

  • HDC2TOG over the first 2 STs
  • HDC in each ST across until 2 remain
  • HDC2TOG over the last 2 STs.

**Each of the following rows will decrease by 2**

Making the top loops

  • CH 1, turn
  • SL ST into first ST
  • CH 3
  • SK next ST
  • SL ST into next ST and each ST across until 2 remain
  • CH 3
  • SK next ST
  • SL ST into final ST

Straps

  • SL ST along the edge until 1st ST marker.
  • CH 101
  • SL ST in 2nd CH from hook and each CH across
  • Join back to the main work with a SL ST

**First top strap made**

  • Continue with SL ST along the edge until bottom corner
  • CH 46
  • SL ST in 2nd CH from hook and each CH across
  • Join back to the main work with a SL ST

**First bottom strap made**

  • SL ST across the bottom edge until the corner
  • CH 46
  • SL ST in 2nd CH from hook and each CH across
  • Join back to the main work with a SL ST

**2nd bottom strap made**

  • SL ST along the edge until 2nd ST marker
  • CH 101
  • SL ST in 2nd CH from hook and each CH across
  • Join back to the main work with a SL ST

**Final top strap made**

  • SL ST along the edge until the top corner
  • Fasten off.
  • Weave in ends

**Cross the top straps and thread them through the opposite top loops.  Tie behind the neck. 

**Bottom straps tie at the waist.
