Free Crochet Cowl Pattern: Ebb Tide Kerchief Cowl

The Ebb Tide Kerchief Cowl is a beautiful textured cowl that works up quickly and uses less than 1 skein of yarn! This cowl is styled in a way to give the look of an oversized triangle scarf or shawl without the extra bulk. Super cute over a simple long sleeve top or under a stylish coat! Using your favorite worsted weight yarn you can have one whipped up in an afternoon! This free crochet cowl pattern is suitable for an intermediate level crocheter!

Second: The cowl is worked in rounds by working into the top edge of the triangle

  • ch3 at the beginning of rows counts as a double crochet
  • ch2 at the beginning of rounds counts as a double crochet

  • Hi, thank you for this beautiful pattern. I made 1 using ILY and hook 6mm but the neck looks too big.
I cant post the picture. What can i do to fix it? Thank you

    • Hi Margarita!! Is it too big around? Or too tall? If too tall you can just eliminate as many rounds as needed to get the height you’d like. If it’s too big around- you could try another round of decreases. Unravel back to round 4 and repeat row 2 instead of DC BLO all the way around… and then continue as normal. I hope that helps

  • LOVE THIS! would you say it would be ok to make the neck portion textured like the rest of the cowl (front post/back post)? would the pattern have to be altered or could you just continue with the texture into the neck?

    thanks in advance!

  • Dear Margarita, thank you for this lovely pattern! One question though, just to make sure. In round one you count 14 DC, but I count 12 DC. And throughout I have always 2 Dc less than your counts…that a mistake or where am I not counting right?

    Lovely greetings from Germany 💜

    • Hi Janine!! For this pattern I have counted each ch at the center point as a stitch as well. So there should be 12 DC + 2 ch. It sounds like your stitch count is probably right- we were just counting different stitches lol!

      I hope that helps!!

  • Hello. So for the cowl part the first row is one dc and the next stitch is 2 together? I have 86 stitches as I had to add a few more rows using thinner yarn. Just want to make sure this is correct.

    • Hi Carmen! For round one you are working 2 stitches into the edge of each row. For round 2: ch2 counts as a st. One stitch, 2 together, one stitch one stitch, 2 together, one stitch one stitch, 2 together etc. This decrease row helps the neck portion to stand more like a collar- if you prefer more of a draping cowl you can skip the decreases altogether.

  • Ok thanks. Yes. I do like the more over fluffy style for the neck but I am
Going to try it this way in this one and maybe do a few more rows. Thanks so much for your quick reply !

  • I made a shortened version of your cowl and modified the cowl part to fit me. I didn't add the last 4 rows of the repeat on row 9. I'm still writing down what I did. May I send you a photo?
