The Tutorial
For this tutorial I am working with I love this yarn from Hobby Lobby in the color Mixed Berry and I’m using a 5.5 mm clover amour crochet hook.
This stitch has 2 rows that make up the base and then a two row repeat for the actual stitch.
The crossed ripple stitch is made in multiples of 3 +2 +1 for the turning chain. In other words, add or subtract in multiples of 3.
For my swatch I’m starting with a chain of 21 which will give me 6 groups of crossed stitches throughout the work.
In bold below this is how the stitch would read written out in a pattern. That can be a little overwhelming, so keep scrolling and I will break it all down!
Ch 21.
1) sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. (20)
2) ch3, turn. *sk 2 st. DC in next st. Ch1. Dc in 1st of 2 sk sts. Repeat from * until 1 st remains. DC in last st. (6 groups)
3) ch1, turn. Sc in each st/ch sp across. (20)
4) ch3, turn. *sk 2 sts, DC in next. Ch1. FPDC around first DC of the crossed group below. Repeat from * until one st remains. DC in last st. (6 groups)
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until desired length.
Now let’s slow that down a little bit….
Ch 21
1) sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (20)
2) ch3, turn. [the chain3 counts as the first dc – skip the first stitch].
Skip two stitches. Double crochet into the next stitch.

Chain 1 and double crochet into the first of the 2 skipped stitches. (Remember the ch3 counts as a stitch so we aren’t worried about that skipped st. We’ll count the next skipped stitch as the first)

Skip two stitches and repeat groups of crossed double crochet stitches until you have 1 stitch left.

At the end of the row you should have 1 stitch remaining. Work 1 DC into that last stitch.

3) ch1, turn. single crochet into each stitch and each chain space across. (20)
4) ch3, turn. (Again, the ch3 counts as a DC so we are going to skip the first stitch.)
Skip the next two stitches and dc into the next.
Ch 1 and then work a front post double crochet around the first dc from the group below it.

Skip two stitches and continue making crossed Front Post DCs across.

Continue repeating rows 3 and 4 until you reach the length desired.

Now that I have a few rows worked you can see the texture from the front post stitches come to life.

And that’s it! Not as hard as it seemed. What will you be creating with the crossed ripple stitch?? Leave a comment below!
